Are you finding the situation surrounding the WEEE Directive confusing? If so, Wilts can make it easier for you…
What is WEEE?
The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive) aims to minimise the impact of electrical and electronic goods on the environment, by increasing re-use and recycling and reducing the amount of WEEE going to landfill.
Who do the WEEE regulations affect?
Any business that manufactures, brands or imports electrical or electronic products plus businesses selling electrical items. The legislation applies to household and non-household products.
When does it come into force?
New regulations came into force at the beginning of the year with full responsibility for the disposal and recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) from 1st July 2007.
What products does it apply to?
- There are several different categories that fall under the directive. For our industry, Lighting Equipment is the key area and applies to products with a voltage of up to 1000 volts AC or up to 1500 volts DC...
- Luminaires for fluorescent lamps with the exception of luminaires in households
- Straight & compact fluorescent lamps
- High intensity discharge lamps, including high pressure sodium lamps and metal halide lamps
- Low pressure sodium lamps
- Other lighting or equipment with the exception of filament bulbs
Will it affect prices?
From 1st July 2007, all products purchased from Wilts that fall into one of the above categories will be subject to a 15p surcharge per item to cover the cost of the disposal. This charge is subject to VAT and will be shown as a separate line on your invoice.
Can this situation be avoided?
These regulations are a legal requirement and unfortunately cannot be avoided.
