Lighting System for Ambulance Control Room Eliminates Fatigue

Posted: 23 February 2009
Wilts Electrical Wholesaler’s independent lighting business, Design Lighting has produced a lighting system for new Welsh Ambulance’s South Wales Headquarters. The project included lighting for all areas of the centre but the control room required the latest in modern direct-indirect lighting. The lighting system ensures that people working night shifts have an environment that feels like daylight to help avoid fatigue.

For the control room, a bio dynamic suspended direct-indirect lighting system is installed which simulates the cycle of daylight, starting at a low level and warm colour temperature in the morning. Gradually, as the day progresses it gets brighter and cooler achieving its brightest and coolest at midday, then returning back through the cycle.

Design Lighting worked with Electrical Contractors, R.H. Morgan Electrical Services to deliver the lighting for the offices, meeting rooms, circulation areas and the call centre control room. Currently 200 people work at the headquarters with up to 70 people located in the call centre control room.

Steve Power, senior lighting engineer for Design Lighting commented, “This was a really interesting project to work on. Ensuring that the ambulance’s staff experience daylight whatever the time, gave us the opportunity to use some very sophisticated technology. We worked very closely with the client and the contractors to ensure that the requirements were met. The final results are brilliant and I hope the staff are finding that the lighting offers a comfortable working environment.”
