Wilts Supports MITIE in Bansang Saving Lives Appeal

Posted: 08 April 2008
Electrical Wholesalers Wilts has donated £1000 of stock to the Bansang Hospital Appeal following a request from one of its major customers MITIE.

MITIE has been supporting the appeal for some time and highlighted its plight to Wilts. MITIE regularly sends out staff to work alongside the local builders to help finish building work and pass on specialist skills. It has also helped to install a solar panel system to generate electricity for the hospital.

The Bansang Hospital stands deep in the African bush and is responsible for the health care needs of some 600,000 Gambians. Additional strains are placed on its extremely limited resources with the constant arrival of patients from, Senegal, Mali, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry and refugees from Sierra Leone.

The Appeal was first set up in 1992 and has helped refurbish a hospital in Gambia. The hospital is now fully functional and delivers a very acceptable level of health care, with conditions on the wards having improved out of all recognition. There is an extremely high demand on its infrastructure and equipment due to the enormous numbers of patients constantly flowing through all departments. Recently replaced equipment and refurbished wards require constant attention and frequent replacements to keep them within acceptable levels of effectiveness.

MITIE is currently working on the restoration of the Old Colonial House, which will involve a radical rebuild of the interior to create twelve bed sitting rooms for single medical staff and two self-contained units for married medical staff. The ground floor will consist of a kitchen, music room and a community hall. This project will greatly enhance the overall upgrade of the staff accommodation that was taken on by the Appeal in 2006.

“When MITIE contacted us about the appeal and told us about the fantastic work they have been doing we were only too happy to help. MITIE is absolutely committed to the project and has donated a vast amount of time and resource to the cause. Their efforts have made a major impact on the local community.” Comments Mark Kingsbury, chairman of Wilts.
